Water Extend Monitoring

Water Extend Monitoring

Summary

Near Infrared Band - NIR (MODIS Band 2) provides the most information for water and land boundary discrimination due to unique respond for this band to water. With simple thresh-holding for NIR band images can be used to separate water (relatively dark pixels) from land (relatively light pixels).

Cloud shadow and terrain shadow have same spectral signature as water. Due to this phenomenon, cloud shadow and terrain shadow will be misclassified as water if simple thresh-holding is employed.

MODIS spectral band 1, band 2 and band 7 which is correspond to Red, Near Infrared (NIR) and Mid Infrared (MIR) respectively, are used for this products. In order to remove clod shadow miss-classification effect, several images that have acquired nearby days are used with assumption of consecutive images don’t have cloud shadow in same place. Hence, algorithm identifies water only if consecutive images detect it as water. Even though, this will not remove cloud shadow 100%. It remove considerable amount of cloud shadow.
